Getting things done - Logie Avenue #dundeewestend

Many thanks to the residents who contacted me to advise that a utility box on the pavement at Logie Avenue near the Sycamore Place junction is exposed to the elements.

I therefore asked the Roads Maintenance Partnership could contact the appropriate utility to have it repaired.

Getting things done - Logie Avenue #dundeewestend

Residents have highlighted overgrown foliage from council-maintained ground on Logie Avenue that is protruding right across the pavement.

I have raised this with the City Council to get this cut back.

Getting things done - West End roads update #dundeewestend

Following my reporting residents' complaints, I am pleased to advise that a series of potholes on Logie Avenue at its east end will be repaired this week.

I have also received from the council's Roads Maintenance Partnership the following feedback on complaints I raised about road surface deterioration in Marchfield Terrace and Hillcrest Road :

"The Road Maintenance Partnership inspector has raised an order for two thermal patches to be done in Hillcrest Road with a timescale for repair of approximately ninety days.    A pothole repair has also been raised for Marchfield Terrace with a timescale for completion of approximately thirty days."

Getting things done - Logie Avenue #dundeewestend

I recently received complaints from residents that a drain is flooding near to the lock-ups at the east end of Logie Avenue.

I took up this concern with the council's Roads Maintenance Partnership and have received the following feedback :

"The gully was cleaned and pipework jetted as far as possible on Thursday of last week.

The pipe is partly blocked due to roots which is causing the problem,  which we plan to tackle this week with the root cutter."

Getting things done - Logie Avenue #dundeewestend

Residents in the Logie area have complained to me about the state of the council-owned ground on Logie Avenue next to the lock-ups at the east end of the street - see below :
I contacted the council's environment team in Neighbourhood Services and have had the following positive feedback :

"Just to confirm I had this site looked into and the ground is Environment's so will will have this area cleaned up.

A site update will also be done to ensure its included in our cyclical work in future."

Getting things done - Logie Avenue #dundeewestend

Residents recently brought to my attention two big potholes on the southern carriageway of Logie Avenue, near its junction with Glenagnes Road.

I brought this to the attention of the council's Roads Maintenance Partnership and have now been updated as follows :

"An order has been raised for the repair of this pothole on Logie Avenue with a timescale for completion of approximately one week."

Getting things done - Logie Avenue #dundeewestend

Having had complaints that some trees along Logie Avenue are overgrown (one resident indicated they are "almost touching cars as they pass by"), I took this up with the City Council.

The council's Assistant Forestry Officer has responded positively as follows :

"I have inspected the trees the length of Logie Ave as requested.

A number of these mature trees do have low canopies obstructing headroom for pedestrians, vehicles, sight lines and grass cutting.

In the coming months I will include the crown lifting and crown balancing of all the offending trees into our mid / late winter work programme."

Getting things done : Logie improvements

Last year, I highlighted the poor condition of the east footway of Ashbank Road and had been promised reconstruction of the pavement would take place.

I am therefore pleased to see the necessary work started before Christmas :
I also asked for improvements to the north pavement of nearby Logie Avenue at the lock-ups and outside the lock-ups themselves and this work was also undertaken just before the festive season :

Speeding concerns - Logie Avenue

Several residents have recently expressed concern about the speed of a minority of drivers in the Logie area, particularly running through the main street - Logie Avenue.

There are concerns that some drivers from outwith the area are using Logie Avenue as a short cut and I asked the council's Head of Transportation for a speed/safety survey to be carried out, which he has kindly agreed to.

Given the large number of elderly people in the area, particularly in the sheltered housing part of Logie, it is important that vehicle speeds are kept to a minimum.

Getting things done ... Logie Avenue

Residents have brought to my attention a bad pothole on the south carriageway of Logie Avenue at its eastern end - see right.

I have reported this to the Roads Maintenance Partnership requesting this pothole is filled in as soon as possible.

Extensive graffiti vandalism in Victoria Park and adjacent streets

I have slammed the mindless vandals responsible for extensive graffiti vandalism in Victoria Park and in nearby streets (Scott Street and viewing area of Logie Avenue).   It is thought the vandalism occurred overnight Friday/Saturday.

Over the weekend, I reported the extensive vandalism to the police and also to the City Council’s Rapid Response Team to get the graffiti cleaned up.   See examples of the graffiti below:

After months of very little of a graffiti issue, it is thoroughly disappointing to see this sort of mindless activity take place at the weekend.     Some of the graffiti is offensive so I hope the council can clean it off as soon as possible but I am concerned about how viable it will be to try to remove the mess on the trees in Victoria Park.   A resident has also advised me that a van was also graffitied.   It is utterly stupid, mindless and criminal activity.

I have asked the police to consider deploying mobile CCTV and would ask if any resident saw any suspicious activity at the park or in surrounding streets, it would be greatly appreciated if they could speak with the local police.

Action on slippy leaves ...

Last week, following concerns from sheltered tenants, I asked the City Council Environment Department to clean up wet, slippy leaves at the Blackness Avenue end of Abbotsford Place and - with thanks - the department attended to this extremely efficiently.

On Sunday, an elderly lady slipped on leaves on Logie Avenue at the junction with Birchwood Place - see photo of the area - right.

Thankfully the lady managed to steady herself and was not injured, but I have asked the council to clean up the leaves here.

The City Council advises me that an instruction has gone out to all street sweepers to tackle leaves on pavements and this is to be welcomed.

Latest West End issues

* Following concerns from residents about flooding at the Seymour Street/Perth Road junction, I reported this to both Scottish Water and the City Council. The City Council has responded as follows :

"The area inspector for Seymour Street has checked the complaint about the flow of water at the Perth Road/Seymour Street junction and has been unable to ascertain the cause of the water overflowing the footway. Scottish Water is to be notified of the problem as the source may be from their apparatus."

* I recently reported the damaged street sign at
Hillside Place. I have received the following feedback from the council :

"I will check this street name plate during this week and include any replacement in the next street name plate order. As yet I don't have a timescale for completion of this but will aim to update you when this information is available."

* I also raised the mess of the grass in Logie Avenue. The Housing Department has responded - the area has been raked and will be re-seeded soon.

Mess left in Logie Avenue : action taken

Following the recent housing improvement works in Logie Estate, residents have complained to me that there’s a fair old mess been left on the grass area in Logie Avenue (for example - near Ashbank Road) where the storage containers were – deep ruts in the grass, some debris and the grass area has been left very muddy.

I have therefore asked for remedial action to be undertaken by the Housing Department.

Friday ...

A very busy day with the 'day job' that unfortunately meant I missed today's Dundee West Transition Town Group meeting, but good to see the good write-up about the group's momentum in tonight's Evening Telegraph.

Later today, I joined John Barnett and team, campaigning in the West End. Here's John and me, pictured in Logie Avenue late this afternoon.

Housing improvements - Blackness and Logie

The project officer in the Housing Department's Improvement Unit has updated me as follows :

Logie - Kitchen & Bathroom Replacement 2009/10

I am sure you are aware that we have lots of containers on Logie Avenue.

I would like to reassure you that any damage to grassed area will be made good when containers are removed.

All going well I anticipate that 7 containers will be removed in January with the remaining removed by April 2010.

The contract is progressing well.

I will be updating the residents' group at their next meeting on 1st December 2009.

Blackness Road - Heating, Kitchen & Bathroom Replacement 2010

I can confirm that progress is being made towards starting work in January 2010.

I have made arrangements for a display container to be located at the garage site at the lower end of Logie Avenue on Tuesday 1st December between 3pm and 6pm for tenants to view kitchen/bathrooms and to discuss any particularly issues that they might have.

This particular container will be removed on Wednesday 2nd December.

Kitchen and Bathroom replacements in Logie

The City Council's Housing Department is proceeding with a kitchen and bathroom replacement programme for the Logie Estate - and it has been brought forward to this financial year.

Along with the contractor, the Housing Investment Unit arranged for a display container to be on show in Logie Avenue yesterday and today, to allow tenants in the area to see a display kitchen and bathroom - so people can see the standard of work and the different finishes, colours of units, handles, etc that they can choose for their home.

It was organised on a "drop in" without the need for an appointment and local councillors were invited to pop in. I had the pleasure of visiting this afternoon and it was good to see the different options available to tenants on show, with helpful staff from the housing project team and the contractors available to answer any questions.

Similar work has been recently underway in both Kirkton and Douglas and it is clear from speaking with the staff this afternoon that tenant satisfaction with the work and new bathrooms and kitchens has been very high. The past couple of days has been a very good example of helpful consultation with the City Council's tenants in the Logie area.

Friendly Bus - new stop!

Following residents' requests to get the Friendly Bus sheltered shopping service to visit the sheltered housing in Logie, I had this response from Stagecoach Strathtay today:

“... spoke to the driver he said that he will be at the corner of Lime Street and Logie Avenue at 10:10 on Thursdays. He will approach from the Scott Street entrance into Lime Street.”

I am sure this will be welcomed by local residents.

Logie Avenue - south carriageway

Just received from the City Council - pleased to see this carriageway being improved :

Dundee City Council propose to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose of facilitating carriageway resurfacing works. The Order is expected to be in force for two weeks from 19 May 2008. Its maximum duration in terms of the Act is eighteen months.

The effect of the Order is to prohibit temporarily all vehicular traffic on the south carriageway of Logie Avenue from Glenagnes Road to Sycamore Place.

Pedestrian thoroughfare and vehicular access to premises will be maintained.

An alternative route will be available via Logie Avenue (north carriageway).

Please forward any comments you may have regarding this proposal to the Network Management Team, Planning and Transportation Department, Tayside House, Crichton Street, Dundee, no later than five working days prior to the commencement date.

If you have any queries please contact the City Council on 433168.
