Temporary Traffic Order - Sycamore Place

Having long-campaigned for road resurfacing in Sycamore Place which - as the photo shows - has a really poor road surface, we were pleased to recently receive the following Temporary Traffic Order from the City Council :

THE ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 - SECTION 14(1)

THE DUNDEE CITY COUNCIL AS TRAFFIC AUTHORITY being satisfied that traffic on the road should be prohibited by reason of carriageway resurfacing works being carried out HEREBY PROHIBIT the driving of any vehicle in Sycamore Place (for its full length), Dundee.

This notice comes into effect on Monday 16th September 2024 for five working days.

Pedestrian thoroughfare will be maintained.

Vehicular access for residents will be maintained where possible.

A diversion route is available via Balgay Road and Scott Street.

Balgay Park entrance at Scott Street - and Sycamore Place update #dundeewestend

The state of the road surface within the “triangle” at the Scott Street entrance to Balgay Park has unfortunately further deteriorated - see photo.

We are pleased to advise that the City Council has updated us that repairs to the road surface here are to take place and the Roads Maintenance Partnership Manager has told us that this work should be taking place next week :

"These works are currently scheduled to be undertaken week commencing 4th March."

Residents will also recall that we were pleased to have been informed last year that resurfacing of the really poor road surface in nearby Sycamore Place between Logie Avenue and Balgay Road was planned for 2023/24.

We recently queried this as the financial year is close to an end and the Roads Maintenance Partnership Manager responded as follows :

"Sycamore Place has unfortunately slipped into next financial year due to delays associated with winter maintenance and the various storm events we have experienced since October (9 total)."

We have replied making clear we would wish to see the resurfacing done as early in the new financial year as possible.

Getting things done - Sycamore Place #dundeewestend

The state of the Sycamore Place road surface - especially the part between Balgay Road and Logie Avenue - is in really poor condition.

Last spring, we asked the council's Roads Maintenance Partnership if the road could be considered for the 2023/24 resurfacing programme.

We are pleased to now advise that it has indeed be added to the carriageway improvement programme for 2023/24.

Sycamore Place - external cyclical maintenance

A number of the tenants in Sycamore Place has asked when their front doors will be repainted as part of the council's external cyclical maintenance programme.

The City Council has updated me as follows :

"I can confirm that doors are painted as part of the ECM Programme and that the next ECM is planned for Logie for 2016/17 financial year."

Flooding issues - Balgay Road

On behalf of residents, I recently raised with the City Council's Roads Maintenance Partnership road flooding concerns regarding Balgay Road.

I have now received the following feedback :

"Balgay Road has been checked and all the gullies are clean and clear although have been noted to be slow-running in times of very heavy rain. 

Previously, any particular issues with ponding water have been dealt with by the gully machine. 

There was no mud noted on the carriageway however it is possible this was run-off from Balgay Hill/ Park which has now been cleared or washed away."

I have also raised similar issues at nearby Sycamore Place, following residents raising these with me.

Getting things done ... Sycamore Place

Residents have reported to me that the litter bin at the corner of Sycamore Place and Balgay Road has been ripped off its post    See right.

I have reported this to the City Council and asked for a repair.

Balgay Road - road flooding

I have received concerns from residents about flooding on the roadway of Balgay Road north of the junction with Sycamore Place  - see photo (right).

I have raised this matter on their behalf with the City Council's Road Maintenance Partnership.

Latest planning and transport initiatives

Here's a couple of the latest news releases from the City Council - these matters will be on the agenda of Planning & Transport Committee, the City Council committee I chair, on Monday coming.

The proposed multi-storey car park at Hunter Street will be a boon for the residents in the West Port area and provide parking for students and staff at the University of Dundee - which will, in turn, relieve parking problems in the West End.

The proposed footpath repairs are very welcome news for the West End and for other parts of Dundee too.

MULTI STOREY CAR PARK

A new £7m multi-storey car park with retail space on the ground floor is being proposed to serve the north west of Dundee city centre.

Dundee City Council's planning and transport committee will consider a report recommending development at the site in Hunter Street at its meeting on Monday (May 12).

Committee convener, Fraser Macpherson said: "With around 430 spaces proposed for the car park it will go a long way to meeting the ever increasing need for parking in that area of the city.

"Demand created by Dundee University, student housing and business developments has boosted the number of vehicles during the day, while the vibrant cultural quarter has increased the need for parking spaces at night.

"More than three times the existing number of spaces in the area will enhance the car parking provision in that part of Dundee."

According to a report by director of planning and transportation Mike Galloway an in depth background study has been carried out, and a short list of options costed against council funding guidelines.

The report recommends advertising for a potential partnering contractor to design and build the car park and retail unit on behalf of Dundee City Council as the best solution.

Other commercial proposals could also be put forward to enhance the development, but the new facilities will continue to be owned and operated by Dundee City Council.

The existing street level car parks at Hunter Street and nearby South Tay Street currently have space for 132 cars.

FOOTPATH REPAIRS

More than £300 000 could be spent on repairing footpaths in Dundee in the next year if councillors back the move.

A report to go to the planning and transport committee on Monday (May 12) highlights 24 stretches of path that will be repaired or replaced during 2008/2009.

Convener of the planning and transport committee, Fraser Macpherson said: "£308,000 has been identified to carry out work on those paths most in need.

"The improved condition will make it easier to get around for elderly people, and those whose mobility is impaired, and will also improve the environment in many areas across the city."

Under a partnership agreement with Dundee City Council, Tayside Contracts will carry out the works if they are approved by the committee.

The 24 locations where work is proposed have been picked from the top of a comprehensive list drawn up by the City Engineer and reviewed annually.

Prioritising of individual locations is based on a combination of condition and usage.

NOTE : All areas of the city benefit, but here are the West End streets concerned :

· Blackness Road (south side Annfield Road to Peddie Street)
· Blackness Road (Ashbank Road to Glenagnes Road)
· Elliot Road (north side at cemetery)
· Sycamore Place (Scott Street to Logie Avenue)
· Hawkhill (north side Taits Lane to Blackness Avenue)

Logie Avenue - south carriageway

Just received from the City Council - pleased to see this carriageway being improved :

Dundee City Council propose to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose of facilitating carriageway resurfacing works. The Order is expected to be in force for two weeks from 19 May 2008. Its maximum duration in terms of the Act is eighteen months.

The effect of the Order is to prohibit temporarily all vehicular traffic on the south carriageway of Logie Avenue from Glenagnes Road to Sycamore Place.

Pedestrian thoroughfare and vehicular access to premises will be maintained.

An alternative route will be available via Logie Avenue (north carriageway).
