Improvements at West End Tennis Club #dundeewestend

"Our Courts at the West End Tennis Club are now all re-surfaced, pristine and smooth; and we have our new accessible pathway in place.   It looks amazing.

The timing could not have been more fitting, as the courts were available very shortly after the release of Lockdown in July, and have seen non-stop action ever since. Fortunately, tennis is a sport people have been able to enjoy despite Covid, and with appropriate measures in place, the Club has never been busier.

We are delighted to have continued our links with Abertay University, and to have established new ones with Dundee University and Harris Academy, whereby students use the courts for tennis practice.

Because of Covid however, we have not been able to have a Grand Opening, as first planned. We do hope that 2021 will allow a delayed event.

Our main sponsor is the Fife Environment Trust."

Great news from West End Tennis Club! #dundeewestend

Last year, I was asked by the West End Tennis Club to write a letter of support for its fundraising effort to resurface the courts and to make them accessible to wheelchair users.

I was delighted to do so as the club is an excellent community sports facility in the West End.

The lifespan of the current court surface is now ending, and the resurfacing is much needed.    It would also ensure that wheelchair users can enjoy the benefits of the club.

I was therefore delighted to be advised by the club recently that the fundraising effort has paid off! 

All the funds are now in place, after a generous donation from the Fife Environment Trust, and there is now a start date for the work of 13th April.

Well done to all at the club for the fundraising effort and many thanks to all the donors.

West End Tennis Club Open Day #dundeewestend

Busy Saturday!

Yesterday morning, I had the pleasure of visiting the West End Tennis Club in Shaftesbury Road to speak with committee members and some of the parents whose children attend Saturday morning training sessions.   

It was good to discuss the club's future plans with the committee and great to see the enthusiasm of all in promoting tennis in the area.

In the afternoon, I attended the Friends of Balgay Summer meeting which took place at the Mills Observatory.  There was an excellent and informative presentation by Dr Kenneth Baxter of the University of Dundee on 'Old Dundee.'   You can read more about Friends of Balgay here.

Delegates - councillors and planning officers from all parts of the UK - were on a tour of Ardler to see the success of the regeneration. Here's part of the group having a welcome cup of tea and shelter from the rain at the Ardler Complex.

The West End Community Council on Tuesday evening had two excellent presentations - one from Digital UK on the analogue TV "switch off" due in Dundee in 2010; the other from West End Tennis Club on their project to improve the club facilities. The Club has given me an update sheet on this which you can read by clicking on the headline above - and you can read more by going to the Club's website at : www.westendtennis.org.uk

Last night, the "Community Spirit" group - to campaign for the Pentland, Tullideph, Ancrum and Cleghorn area (and surrounding neighbourhood) - held its first AGM and was formally launched, at a well-attended meeting in the Mitchell Street Centre.

It was great to see the enthusiasm of local people who are keen to get an active community group going for the area to help tackle local issues in the north part of the West End Ward - just as West End Community Council does so well for the southern part of the ward. City councillors, the Police and others are keen to support the group in its activities in the months ahead.

Also yesterday, I spoke with Mrs Latif, following the robbery at her newsagents in Lochee Road earlier in the week. The local community is shocked at another incident of this type in the area, and very concerned for Mrs Latif in particular. I have contacted Tayside Police to ask for the use of mobile CCTV units in the Lochee Road area, which I think will help reassure the local community.
