Getting things done - Glenagnes Road and Scott Street #dundeewestend

Following residents mentioning to us that the foliage at the junction of of Glenagnes Road and Scott Street was very overgrown and reducing the width of the pavement/path there (see photo), we asked Home Group who has responsibility here to have this cut back.

We thereafter received this update from Home Group’s Operations Manager :

“Our maintenance surveyor attended the site several times and can advise the whole of Glenagnes Road and Scott St have all been faced off back beyond trip fence.”

The foliage had also been encroaching onto some back gardens in Logie Gardens and we were assured this was also attended to.

Getting things done - Glenagnes Road #dundeewestend

Fencing along part of the east side of Glenagnes Road down from the West End schools campus has been log deteriorated and the land behind it is very overgrown and unsightly.

Residents asked us to try to find out who is in ownership and, with thanks to the council's Private Sector Services Unit, ownership has been traced and the agent asked to have the fence replaced and the land tidied.

Getting things done : Glenagnes Road

Last year, following my request, at a site in Glenagnes Road (east side south of the West End Campus), the council erected a chespale fence to avoid any fly-tipping.

However, the area has become overgrown and untidy over time, and I contacted the council again about this, following requests from residents.

The Neighbourhood Services Department has responded as follows :

“We carried out a litter pick last year when the fence was erected.   I am happy to litter pick again and spread woodchip over the site ... at least this will make it more pleasant to look at.”

Glenagnes Road and Glenagnes Street

Glenagnes Road site
In past weeks, I have highlighted residents' concerns about untidy, unkempt areas in Glenagnes Street and Glenagnes Road.

I am pleased to advise that I have now had confirmation that the Environment Department will be tidying both sites.

Additionally, at the site in Glenagnes Road (east side south of the West End Campus), the department will also erect a chespale fence where the previous (now removed) fence was, to avoid any further fly-tipping.

Getting things done - Glenagnes Road

I have received residents' concerns about the area of ground in Glenagnes Road to the immediate north of the West End Schools' Campus site - see right.

It has lain empty for years but during the campus construction, the site was used for storage of materials.   To access it, the fence that runs down the pavement side was largely removed and it has not been reinstated.

I have asked the City Council to have the area tidied and the fence replaced.

The Education Department has responded helpfully as follows :

"This piece of ground (a bit of no-man's land) now falls within the responsibility of the Environment Department. I have now contacted them and they are to visit the site and determine a suitable remedy."

Tuesday update

Today, I took part in the Jericho House Support Group latest meeting, at which we discussed and planned events for this very worthwhile project, including a dance during November and also a play Jericho House is planning on the subject of recovery from alcoholism.  It is hoped the play will run during West End Christmas Week.  The recent sponsored walk for Jericho House raised nearly £1000 - an excellent result.

Later on, I attended the West End Schools Project Board - the board set up to oversee the building project on the former Logie Secondary School site on Blackness Road for a new St Joseph's Primary School and Park Place Nursery and Primary Schools.    I mentioned that the City Council must consider the need for a school crossing patroller on Glenagnes Road when the new schools open in October 2012.

Tonight, I attended a meeting of River Crescent Residents' Association at which I discussed with residents a number of local matters, including the possibility of a Friends group for Riverside Nature Park and local roads issues.

This morning's Courier covered my comments about Royal Mail's decision to close the Crichton Street collection office and tonight's Evening Telegraph reported on the 4S bus situation to St John's High School and my concerns at the removal of this school bus.    A meeting of parents about the matter has been arranged for next Wednesday and I have booked Blackness Library for that meeting.

Glenagnes Road

I have raised in past months concerns about the condition of the ground on the east side of Glenagnes Road - and the fallen boundary fencing.

Some of the fencing is still fallen over (see below) so I have again contacted the City Council's Planning Enforcement Officer to chase up the site owners about this matter.

Friday activities ...

I have been in a very wet Motherwell today with the "day job" but on return spoke with Clive Gillman, Director of Dundee Contemporary Arts, about a competition DCA recently ran that has raised my concerns and those of the other councillors who serve on the DCA Board. The matter is covered in tonight's Evening Telegraph, and I am pleased to say that Clive has assured me that such a competition will not be repeated in the future.

I had a letter in
yesterday's Tele following a resident raising her concerns about the condition of the ground on the east side of Glenagnes Road - and the fallen boundary fencing. I have now received feedback from the City Council's Enforcement Officer as follows :

"I have visited the above site and would advise I shall write out to the owner and advise he tidy the site and make it secure."

And, lastly for tonight, my Dundee LibDem colleague and community activist Allan Petrie has created the following excellent response to that misinformed Travelodge survey that suggested that Dundee was not a place to visit because of "bad weather" :

Logie Avenue - south carriageway

Just received from the City Council - pleased to see this carriageway being improved :

Dundee City Council propose to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose of facilitating carriageway resurfacing works. The Order is expected to be in force for two weeks from 19 May 2008. Its maximum duration in terms of the Act is eighteen months.

The effect of the Order is to prohibit temporarily all vehicular traffic on the south carriageway of Logie Avenue from Glenagnes Road to Sycamore Place.

Pedestrian thoroughfare and vehicular access to premises will be maintained.

An alternative route will be available via Logie Avenue (north carriageway).

Please forward any comments you may have regarding this proposal to the Network Management Team, Planning and Transportation Department, Tayside House, Crichton Street, Dundee, no later than five working days prior to the commencement date.

If you have any queries please contact the City Council on 433168.
