Getting things done - Oxford Street/Blackness Road #dundeewestend

Residents highlighted to us that it was difficult to safely exit Oxford Street onto Blackness Road as the tree branches blocked sight lines.

We therefore asked the City Council to attend to this and this work was thereafter promptly undertaken.

Getting things done - Seymour Street #dundeewestend

We have had numerous concerns from residents about the deteriorating state of the road surface at the north end of Seymour Street.

We raised this with the council's Roads Maintenance Partnership and have received the following response :

"An order has been raised for repairs to be carried out in Seymour Street.

It is not currently included in the five year Carriageway Programme. However, it will be condition scored in the near future and will be considered for future works dependant on that."

Bus timetables at bus stops - or lack of them! - an update

Residents will recall that we highlighted some time ago that, although real time bus information is working at bus shelters, paper timetables have been out of date since the bus companies altered services at the start of the COVID-19 health emergency.

This has dragged on far too long. The City Council has maintained the position that 'instability' in the bus network has made providing new timetables at bus stops difficult, but we are have now been advised by the council's Team Leader, Parking & Sustainable Transport as follows :

"We are targeting the timetable information to be ready for display by 15th August 2022.

We are required to create the timetable display in pdf format using the data supplied by the bus operators. We have now received that from Xplore Dundee and will look to create the PDFs over the next two weeks.

These will be then sent to the printer who will print the PDFs to specialist (waterproof) paper. We should receive the displays back from the printer by mid August allowing us to start setting out the information at the stops to coincide with the new timetables.

I had hoped we would have been able to create publicity for some of the stops on routes that are unaffected by the Xplore Dundee service changes in August. If this can be achieved earlier than the timeframe above I will let you know.

We will be provide printed information on selected stops only. Locations will be decided in due course but we will consider a number of factors when making our decision - e.g. whether the stop is used primarily for boarding or alighting, whether the bus timetable is expected to be varied regularly, the availability of real time information at the location."

Whilst the return of bus timetables is welcome, whilst we do not expect them where real time information is available at bus shelters, we would want them at all other bus stops. We have asked the City Council to confirm this will be the case.

Magdalen Green footbridge replacement - public engagement #dundeewestend

Further to our previous updates on the project that, subject to funding support from Sustrans, the walking and cycling charity, would replace the Magdalen Green footbridge across the rail line to Riverside, with a new footbridge, the council is now udertaking public engagement on this.

If you use the bridge and/or Magdalen Green on a regular or occasional basis, please give your views about the current bridge, how you use Magdalen Green, and what you’d like to see in the future.

Blether Tay-Gither - Storytelling in Dundee - tonight!

Blether Tay-Gither is the Dundee Storytelling Group.

From Sheila Kinninmonth, Blether Tay-Gither’s secretary :

Once again we are meeting tonight in the historic Dudhope Castle where we have been offered the use of a lovely space.

It is a little out of the city centre but there is plenty parking and the 28 bus goes in that direction - there is a bus stop just a couple of minutes walk from the castle.

Time : 7.00pm - 9.00pm

Our Theme this month if you need one is "Spinning Tales and Weaving Words."

We are exploring stories of weaving, spinning, fabric, cloth, or any variations on this theme. The world of stories has many tales related to the magic of cloth. weaving, and spinning, some of our most classic western fairytales have this as the central craft.

But as always you can tell any tale you please, or just come along for a listen and a blether.

Note : It is not a cafe but we do have access to a kettle and we'll bring some tea and coffee but if you'd prefer, you are welcome to bring your own.

Dundee Botanic Garden event - open studio and land art exhibition today #dundeewestend

Fulbright scholar Adrien Segal and the University of Dundee Botanic Garden would like to invite you to an open studio and land art exhibition today - Thursday 21st July - from 4pm until 7pm at the Botanic Garden.   Light refreshments and drinks will be provided along with a talk and exhibition walk led by the artist and the garden curator.

Cyclogenisis is a new site-specific earthwork in progress at the Dundee Botanical Garden, located in an area where a grouping of eucalyptus trees were felled by two extratropical storms, Arwen and Barra felled forty-five trees, at the garden in an extraordinary weather event associated with a changing climate, during the winter of 2021-22.

Responding to the climatic events that caused strong wind forces that felled the trees, the artist interpreted a diagram of the pattern of cyclogenisis showing four stages of development of a strengthening cyclone into a physical earthwork that pays homage to the recent weather events that caused a dramatic change to this landscape. Manifested from materials at hand, including the felled eucalyptus trees, the artwork provides a space for visitors to experience cyclonic patterns and movements by walking through and around the earthwork.

The artwork was created in partnership with DJCAD Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Artist Adrien Segal and the University of Dundee Botanical Garden, with support from scientists from CEDA (Centre for Environmental Data Analysis).

In addition to the earthwork in progress, Adrien will have a related installation of smaller scale sculptural experimentations in clay, cast bronze, and carved wood, made during her Fulbright fellowship at DJCAD. These will be on view in the Living Lab during the opening.

This may be one of the most creative outcomes from Storm Arwen, as Adrien Segal has worked with our garden technician Trevor Whyte to create land art in the wake of the storm that wrought damage to University of Dundee Botanic Gardens living collections.

A visual reminder that becoming resilient is not to wipe away the evidence of climate change but to develop the capacity to recover quickly from the difficulties & adapt to the emerging state.

Friends of Riverside Nature Park event - all welcome! #dundeewestend

Pollinators and Wildflowers event - this Sunday 17th July 1pm to 3pm

Come along to a guided outing at Riverside Nature Park and learn about the many insects we have which pollinate our wildflowers and crops.

Not just bees but butterflies, wasps, hoverflies, beetles etc - all play their part. We need them for our survival yet modern agriculture, greenspace management and climate change are causing massive declines.

The wildflower meadows at Riverside help maintain a rich diversity of flowers and pollinators.

Come along, all ages welcome, children with appropriate supervision.

Bring magnifying glasses and cameras if you have them.

Meet at car park in Wright Avenue.

Magdalen Green footbridge replacement - further update #dundeewestend

As we have previously advised, the City Council is working on a possible project that, subject to funding support from Sustrans, the walking and cycling charity, would result in a  new Magdalen Green footbridge across the rail line to Riverside - one that is suitable for wheelchair users or cyclists.

We recently asked for a further update from the City Council engineer who is working on this project and he advises :

"Sustrans has asked us for additional supporting information in the form of a widened consultation, something that wasn't feasible during Covid restrictions, as well as refreshed construction costs to reflect the current market.

There will be a variety of consultation events, such as a workshop and social media engagement. There will be contact made with all local politicians and community groups as part of this.

Following this, we will be applying for Sustrans funding in September to take the project towards construction stage funding.

We should find out if we are successful mid-December, although would note the timescales for funding applications and awards are dictated by Sustrans."

He also confirmed that repairs will be carried out to the damaged step on the current footbridge that we recently reported following residents' concerns.
