Jamaican Journeys and Dundee Adventures : In Conversation with Judy Ann MacMillan

Based in Kingston, Judy Ann MacMillan is one of Jamaica’s most celebrated painters.

Well-known for her acutely observed portraits, landscapes and still life paintings, she exhibits locally and internationally and in 2007 was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Caribbean Foundation for the Arts, for her outstanding contribution in the field of art.

In 1962 Judy travelled to Scotland to study at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee. Her time in the city would have a significant impact on her subsequent career - she later wrote: “Dundee formed me and I am forever grateful for its influence in my life.”

This special online event on Monday 29th September at 7pm - online - accompanies the exhibition Jamaican Journeys: Identity, Place and Conversations through Art, now showing in the Lamb Gallery. Judy will be in conversation with Dr Susan P Mains, Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Dundee.

Doors Open Days 2025 – events tomorrow and Sunday #dundeewestend

Marchfield Road #dundeewestend

With thanks to Derek Macintosh and Dundonian History for All, a fabulous West End photograph from World War II.

On Tuesday 5th November, 1940, the house at 12 Marchfield Road was hit by a German bomb (as were properties in Rosefield Street).

Fortunately all the occupants of 12 Marchfield Road were in their air raid shelter at the time and were uninjured by the blast.

Dundee Discoveries past and present

"Dundee Discoveries past and present" is a series of self-guided walking tours through pioneering scientific research in medicine, biology, forensics, nursing and dentistry from the past to the present.

Dundee is now celebrated internationally for its pioneering work in medical sciences, in particular the University of Dundee’s ground-breaking research into cancer, diabetes, drug development and surgical techniques. 

But the city has many more amazing stories of innovation and discovery in medicine and biology, past and present, and the three walking tours presented here will introduce you to some of the most extraordinary.

Tay Square mosaic - an update #dundeewestend

Residents will recall that we have previously raised with the City Council the fact that the mosaic in Tay Square in front of The Rep is sadly badly damaged - see photo.

We recently sought an update from the council's Head of Planning and Economic Development on the likelihood of repairs being viable and have now been advised as follows :

"Unfortunately, following assessment it has been concluded that the artwork is beyond repair.

We have been working with colleagues in Roads Maintenance to identify a workable solution.

Trials earlier this year of a new material to fit into the space were unsuccessful. Other solutions are now being explored although I am unable to confirm when this issue will be resolved."

We have asked to be kept informed of any developments with this and will update residents when we hear further. It would be good to get a workable solution that makes the damaged space look good and compliments the sections of the mosaic that are undamaged.

Getting things done - Shaftesbury Park #dundeewestend

Over a lengthy period, residents have contacted us about the deteriorating state of the road surface in Shaftesbury Park - see photos.

Although, at our request, localised repairs have taken place over time, we asked the council's Roads Maintenance Partnership if resurfacing could be considered in a future roads capital programme.

The partnership's manager recently advised us that it was piloting a thin overlay solution elsewhere in the city and if successful, it would allow for resurfacing of Shaftesbury Park during September.

He has now advised us :

"We were successful in our thin overlay scheme elsewhere in the city. Therefore, the works at Shaftesbury Park will be going ahead."

This is great news and we publish the temporary traffic order about the works below :

THE ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 - SECTION 14(1)

THE DUNDEE CITY COUNCIL AS TRAFFIC AUTHORITY being satisfied that traffic on the road should be prohibited by reason of carriageway resurfacing works being carried out HEREBY PROHIBIT the driving of any vehicle in Shaftesbury Park for its entire length.

This notice comes into effect on Monday 8th September 2025 for five working days.

Pedestrian thoroughfare will be maintained.

Vehicular access for residents will be maintained where possible.

As this road forms a cul de sac no diversion is available.
