Balgay Park entrance at Scott Street - and Sycamore Place update #dundeewestend

The state of the road surface within the “triangle” at the Scott Street entrance to Balgay Park has unfortunately further deteriorated - see photo.

We are pleased to advise that the City Council has updated us that repairs to the road surface here are to take place and the Roads Maintenance Partnership Manager has told us that this work should be taking place next week :

"These works are currently scheduled to be undertaken week commencing 4th March."

Residents will also recall that we were pleased to have been informed last year that resurfacing of the really poor road surface in nearby Sycamore Place between Logie Avenue and Balgay Road was planned for 2023/24.

We recently queried this as the financial year is close to an end and the Roads Maintenance Partnership Manager responded as follows :

"Sycamore Place has unfortunately slipped into next financial year due to delays associated with winter maintenance and the various storm events we have experienced since October (9 total)."

We have replied making clear we would wish to see the resurfacing done as early in the new financial year as possible.

Un-Earthed #dundeewestend

From the Curator of Museum Services at the University of Dundee :

The latest exhibition in the Lamb Gallery is "Un-Earthed" and features art and artefacts exploring our connections to the land.

As human beings we are all dependent on the land and the resources it provides. Yet we are increasingly becoming disconnected from the natural world around us and our overexploitation of the land is causing an environmental crisis.

This thought-provoking exhibition looks at ways in which we have explored, represented and exploited the land and how artists in Scotland have responded to these themes over the years.

The exhibition is divided into various inter-related themes, including Representing the Land, Urbanisation, Exploiting the Land, Returning to Nature, Environmental Crisis and Evidence of the Past. All of the artworks, artefacts and specimens on display come from the University’s Museum Collections.

The Lamb Gallery in the Tower Building is open Monday to Saturday and the exhibition will be on until 27th April.

Getting things done - Milnbank Road #dundeewestend

Residents recently pointed out to us that a bus stop on Milnbank Road's north side near Polepark Road has the sign on it saying 'Clepington Road'!

The pole/stop has clearly been re-used from a redundant bus stop elsewhere and we have asked council transport officers to have the sign on it corrected.

Getting things done - Blinshall Street and Douglas Street #dundeewestend

We recently received concerns about the functioning of the junction of Blinshall Street and Douglas Street around a minority of drivers failing to give way.

We raised this with the City Council's Traffic and Road Safety Team Leader who has responded as follows :

"We will have a look at this location as soon as possible.

I have had a look at the accident record and we have two slight accidents at this location in the last 5 years. However, both these accidents have occurred in the 2023.

I am going to have a look at this as I suspect that the road markings have worn off and motorist are not realising it is a give-way.

Once I have had a look I will push the roads maintenance partnership to get it rectified as soon as I can."

At a recent meeting of the parent council for Blackness Primary School - Friends of Blackness - it was highlighted with us that the wooden low-rise fencing at the east end of the Pennycook Lane car park is in poor shape - see photos.

Friends of Wighton - lunchtime recital

From Sheena Wellington :

Lunchtime Recital, Wednesday 7th February - 1.15pm - 1.45pm – Aandowin Trio at the Wighton Centre, Central Library in the Wellgate Centre

Aandowin are Peter Cooper (fiddle), Margaret Leighton (accordion) and Bill Shackman (cittern).

The group plays a laid-back mix of Shetland and Celtic session tunes.

With their usual good timing they formed just before lockdown meaning that practicing in a gazebo became the only option.

They can occasionally be seen busking outside St Andrews public library until they make enough money for lunch, at which point they stop.

Update on former rail goods yard at Seabraes #dundeewestend

As residents are aware, over many years, the former rail goods yard at Seabraes behind Roseangle has been fenced off due to decontamination works by contractors for site owners Scottish Enterprise (SE).

It was pointed out to us that recently, although the hoardings along the path from Roseangle are still there, the east entrance (where Greenmarket roadway currently ends) was wide open and the public could walk into the site.

We raised several questions with SE - below - along with SE's responses :

Q : Is the access at the east end intentional?

A : Access is not intentional and Colliers our managing agent for the site have now instructed the landscapers to secure the site as soon as possible.

Q : If so, should the hoardings now be removed?

A : There is no intention for the hoardings to be removed at this time.

Q : Is the decontamination work complete?

A : The outstanding work is not in relation to decontamination; however, it is a drainage issue which we are working to resolve following remediation work which was carried out by SE several years ago.

We are actively working towards a solution to the drainage issue on this site, however it is a complicated process which involves involvement of both Network Rail and Tesco who own neighbouring land.

Due to the involvement of other parties and the complicated nature of these works, it is expected to take some time to resolve.

Q : What are SE’s intentions now for the site?

A : Once the drainage issue has been resolved it is intended that SE market the site for sale (residential use).
