At 6.30pm tonight - Christmas in Print  - the twentieth century – an online event with Erin Farley of Dundee Libraries.

Christmas became a public holiday in Scotland in 1958, though its celebration was growing in popularity long before this official designation. 

In Dundee, local publishers and writers marked the season through annuals and postcards, and the Christmas advert became a staple for local businesses. 

Erin Farley from Dundee Libraries shares some seasonal highlights from the Local History Centre's collections.

As part of West End Christmas Fortnight, The Little Green Larder has teamed up with Transition Dundee to bring back the West End Christmas Market!

There will be hot food and drinks, sustainable gifts, festive fun, live music and, of course, the Christmas light switch-on, with a visit from Santa.

The market is this Thursday 1st December from 4pm to 8pm in Miller's Wynd Car Park.

West End Christmas Fortnight starts tomorrow! #dundeewestend

West End Christmas Fortnight starts tomorrow – Saturday 26^th November.

This year’s Dundee West End Christmas Fortnight will be the largest ever in its 22 years, with around 50 events taking place, including a Christmas Concert, Christmas Market and Lights Switch on in Perth Road, competitions including a West End Primary School Art Competition and a Primary 6 schools football competition, a Christmas Cards initiative to all West End care home residents - as well as talks, a walking tour of the West End and an event to celebrate the centenary of the Logie scheme.

During the Fortnight that runs from Saturday 26^th November until Saturday 10^th December, we will hold around 50 events – easily the most we have ever run.    Big thanks go to all the Christmas Committee members, community groups, churches and everyone else who has made this happen – community spirit is alive and well in the wonderful West End!

Getting things done - Corso Street sheltered lounge - handrail #dundeewestend

Although there is a handrail for tenants to use coming out of the Corso Street sheltered lounge going both north and south from the lounge, residents have highlighted to us that the handrail running south towards Blackness Avenue runs out before you reach the junction with Blackness Avenue.

All there is at the moment is a metal fence with a lot of spikes that is being neither safe or satisfactory for a tenant with mobility difficulties to hold onto.

We raised this problem with the City Council and have received a very helpful and positive response from the Project Officer in the Special Needs Unit :

"I have spoken with our blacksmith and he has advised that he will be able to fit a metal handrail to the existing railings which will improve the accessibility leading from the complex onto Blackness Avenue."

This has now been undertaken and is a good job well-done - see photos before and after!

Connecting Carers Café #dundeewestend

The second Connecting Carers Café for the West End and Lochee is this Thursday morning at the Friary in Tullideph Road.

Feedback from the October café that Fraser attended was that the starting time was a bit early for some carers to attend. 

Therefore the start time has been amended from 9.30am to 10.15am and now offering the carers soup and a roll.

The Big Cushion Push #dundeewestend

Next week, we'll be highlighting a lot of the forthcoming West End Christmas Fortnight events with Christmas Fortnight starting next Saturday - 26th November.

In advance of that, we'd like to highlight this excellent initiative as part of the fortnight, with thanks to Antonia Burnett who writes :

"I have an interior design business based in the West End of Dundee and I have teamed up with another interior designer to organise a cushion sale to raise money for Dundee & Angus Foodbank.  

We will hold the sale at Logie & St John’s (Cross) Church Hall on Saturday 10^th December from 11am to 5pm.  We will be selling new cushions, second hand cushions and also fabric remnants for people that might want to make their own cushions. 

We have already been receiving donations from curtain makers and local businesses but we are now putting out a call to the general public to ask for donations of good quality second hand cushions.  The Fabric Mill Dundee has kindly offered to act as a drop off point for donations."

Getting things done - Blackness Avenue #dundeewestend

Residents have over a period of time asked for better crossing facilities well up Blackness Avenue from the pedestrian crossing at the Hawkhill junction.

Although there are significant vehicle movements, the number of pedestrian crossings means that that part of the street would not meet the criteria for a light-controlled pedestrian crossing.

We therefore requested consideration of the provision of an additional pedestrian refuge island to allow pedestrians to break their crossing half way across the busy street.

We are pleased to say this was agreed to and the Senior Engineer - Traffic & Road Safety at the City Council has updated us as follows :

"Here is the location of a pedestrian refuge island you had requested a while back within the area.

After a good bit of investigating on a location this one the most suitable."

We have marked it with a red X on the plan below. 

It will be just north of the junction with Lytton Street and is now being programmed into the future works programme. 

Feedback from the residents who raised this has been very positive, so a good outcome.

Future of the Blackness industrial area #dundeewestend

In line with the requirements of the council’s Local Development Plan, back in 2019, city council planners consulted on a proposed Design Framework for the future development of the Blackness General Economic Development Area.

This covers the industrial area north of the Hawkhill by-pass to Lochee Road running from West Marketgait in the east to Lower Pleasance in the west.

The framework was subject to a six week consultation, including a drop-in event at Verdant Works that Fraser attended, in the heart of the area.

The concept was to unlock the potential of the area to bring vacant, derelict or underused land and buildings back into productive use, as well as improving employment opportunities and productivity.

We recently asked for an update on progress since the adoption of the Design Framework as we are anxious to see progress with this.

The council’s Head of Planning and Economic Development has responded as follows :

“When approved in 2019, the Blackness Business Place Plan sought to encourage new development opportunities to help regenerate this industrial area. The Plan facilitated more use diversification and generated positive discussions with building owners, developers and architects regarding the redevelopment of several buildings.

Unfortunately, Covid19 did impact on development interest. However, you will be aware that some mixed-use student accommodation projects did progress and were granted planning permission during April 2021 for 63 Brown Street and November 2021 for 56 Brown Street).  Whilst no building works have commenced so for, the 63 Brown Street project has recently applied to discharge their planning conditions, which is a sign that development may proceed.  

In addition, we have a planning application for no.9 Guthrie Street as well as several proposals that are pre-application discussion stage.

Significant progress has also been made with the City Centre Strategic Investment Plan, which was recently reported to City Development Committee.    A major aim of the plan is to strengthen links between the city centre and surrounding areas by improving pedestrian connectivity and active travel routes.

These medium to long-term interventions will take time to design and deliver, but should make further improvements to the Blackness area by making it more integrated with the city centre, particularly via the Guthrie Street/Ward Road axis.”

Getting things done - Riverside Approach and Blackness Road #dundeewestend

Fraser is pictured at Riverside Approach where we have long campaigned for a proper pedestrian crossing, given the number of pedestrians including children and elderly folk crossing between the Roseangle playpark and Magdalen Green crossing here.

At the council's City Development Committee recently, councillors unanimously agreed to alter the long-standing pv2 pedestrian crossing assessment for the provision of pedestrian crossings to better take account of pedestrian movements including those of young people, people with mobility difficulties, etc.

At committee :

👉  Michael asked if this would improve the chances of getting a crossing in Riverside Approach.

👉  Fraser asked if the chances of a proper crossing on Blackness Road at the Kelso steps would be improved.    This is another location where many residents have highlighted the need for a crossing given the number of folk crossing to get to Royal Victoria Hospital and also the significant number of Harris Academy and Blackness Primary School pupils crossing.

We were assured that all historic pv2 pedestrian crossing assessments will be reassessed using the new criteria and we hope this will result in more pedestrian crossings being provided including at Riverside Approach and Blackness Road.

Getting things done - Hawkhill #dundeewestend

Residents will recall that, following the recent road collision on Hawkhill opposite the Peddie Street junction, the safety barrier was badly damaged.

We asked the Roads Maintenance Partnership for a temporary barrier pending the permanent replacement. This was provided very promptly but part of the section recently came detached as the photo shows.

We raised this with the council's Head of Sustainable Transport and Roads who responded positively as follows :

"I’m advised that the permanent repair will be completed this month.

The roads maintenance partnership didn’t have the required panels in store so this order was grouped with others for an aggregated material procurement.

In the interim a squad will attend to re-erect the temporary barriers and secure with cable ties to mitigate further uncoupling."

Building Bridges Symposium 2022

The Building Bridges Symposium 2022 is the latest in a series of successful symposiums run by the Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education.

This particular event next Thursday will be focussing on the fascinating and largely unknown history of Arabic poetry fragments found in the eminent Cairo Genizah. 

These fragments of ancient poetry constitute a unique source for understanding Medieval and Early-Modern Egypt from three main perspectives: Arabic studies, Jewish social and cultural studies, and anthropological studies.

The 2022 Symposium will feature a keynote speech on the Cairo Genizah, presentations with panel discussions, and an exhibition.

Getting things done - Perth Road #dundeewestend

Michael is pictured on the south pavement of Perth Road where we have received residents' complaints about the poor condition of the footpath which has been repeatedly patched and is very uneven.

As one resident put it :

"I have noticed considerable deterioration along this stretch.

This is a narrow footpath which is extremely uneven and badly patched.

When it rains the whole stretch becomes a massive puddle."

We have taken this up with the council's Roads Maintenance Partnership requesting an improved pavement surface here.

Mosaic and Craft Club tomorrow! #dundeewestend

Ninewells Community Garden's Mosaic and Craft Club takes place in the Leaf Room at the garden - tomorrow - Friday 11th November - from 10am to 12 noon.

Come along to create colourful coasters, decorate flowerpots and make homemade gifts for your friends and family.

Feel free to bring any of your own craft projects or just come along for a cup of tea and a biscuit.

Artwork in the West Port #dundeewestend

We have been in correspondence with the council's Public Art Officer and the creator of the West Port Pyramid and Canopies sculptured artwork Stan Bonnar and are pleased that there has now been given some long overdue tender loving care, with the paintwork washed on the canopies and removal of the unsightly rails round it.

The Public Art Officer hopes to have a further upgrade of the sculpture and to include the seats as part of this - and we will keep residents updated on this.

NOTE :   This week’s planned works for Dunmore Gardens and Dunmore Drive are slightly delayed.    We contacted the Roads Maintenance Partnership Manager about this and have been advised :

“Unfortunately due to significant drainage issues at Torridon Road and Morlich Gardens this week which necessitated the removal of squads from this scheme while a complete redesign was undertaken, Dunmore Gardens has required to be delayed. 

Due to the works at Torridon Road and Morlich Gardens having had all bituminous materials removed before issues were discovered with the drainage, the Roads Maintenance Partnership has had no choice to return to these works W/C the 7th of November which unfortunately does mean Dunmore Gardens requires to be reprogrammed due to the road space booked for these works (and other schemes) not allowing the RMP to return late next week or the week after.

While I know this is far from ideal, I can assure you these works will be undertaken at a later date, which is yet to be determined.”

 This is a disappointing delay.    We have asked to be kept updated on the revised resurfacing dates and will keep residents advised as we hear further.

Abertay Historical Society is hosting a talk on "Reflections on Churchill and Dundee: 100 years after Defeat" on Wednesday 9th November at 6.30pm at the Dalhousie Building, University of Dundee.

Speakers are Kenneth Baxter, Billy Kenefick and Jim Tomlinson.

Getting things done - Lochee Pavilion #dundeewestend

Fraser is pictured at the pavilion in Lochee Park.

The Lochee Family Fun group is running its Dundee West Youth Club every Tuesday evening at the pavilion but has pointed out to us that the pavilion badly needs paintwork, new tables/chairs, kitchen improvements and external lighting.

We have raised this with the City Council as the family fun group's activities deserve support and the pavilion must be an inviting space for local children in the darker nights.

Getting things done - Dunmore Gardens and Dunmore Drive #dundeewestend

Michael is pictured in Dunmore Gardens. Having long campaigned for road resurfacing for both Dunmore Gardens and Dunmore Drive which are badly deteriorated, we are pleased to advise that resurfacing is now imminent.

The Roads Maintenance Partnership has confirmed that resurfacing woks are programmed to commence on Wednesday 9th November, with works expected to take 5 working days.
