Frankenstein - complete public reading and mystery tour!

From the Curator of Museum Services at the University of Dundee :

Frankenstein - complete public reading and mystery tour!
29th-30th September 2018

As part of the University of Dundee’s Frankenstein 200 events programme, we are delighted to present a complete public reading of the 1818 text taking place over a single weekend in various locations around Dundee, Angus and Fife.

It was while living in Dundee as guests of the Baxter family (later to become founders of the University) that the young Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin was first inspired to become a writer, so what better place to read her most celebrated masterpiece!

We will start at Discovery Point at 9am on Saturday 29th September and visit various locations on foot and via a coach provided for the event.   Day 1 will conclude at the University’s Tower Building around 5.30pm.

Day 2 will start at the Tower Building at 9.30am and will end at South Baffin Street at around 5.30pm.    We will read the book in sections of 30-60 minutes, moving to a different mystery location for each part. There will be breaks for lunch and refreshments but attendees should bring their own food and drink.   The event will include quite a bit of walking over rough terrain and we will mostly be outdoors, whatever the weather!

Because of the nature of the event, participants must attend all of Day 1 and/or all of Day 2 and will be expected to read aloud one or more sections of the book (we will allocate sections at random to participants, but you will be informed before the event which section we would like you to read). Because of limited numbers, tickets will only be available to those not wishing to read after we have signed up enough readers.   Tickets will be sold separately for each day (£12 for each day).

Your ticket allows us to cover the cost of the coach and participants will also be sent a free copy of the new Dundee edition of Frankenstein to be published in November.

Places are limited so don’t miss the chance to take part in this unique immersive event.     Book now here.

Lochee Park car park extension #dundeewestend

I am pleased to see the commencement of work last week on the car park extension at Lochee Park - see below :
This is good news as it will provide additional capacity and also, when the park is busy with teams, ensure the spillage of parked vehicles onto local streets is minimised.

Additionally, there will be improvements to the playpark with new equipment in the fairly near future which is further good news for the area.

Getting things done - Hillside Place #dundeewestend

Residents have complained to me about the poor, worn road condition in Hillside Place and I raised this with the Roads Maintenance Partnership.

This is the response I have received :

"The Road Maintenance Partnership inspector has advised that there are currently no actionable defects in Hillside Place.   However he has raised an order for thermal patching to be carried out when resources are available. There are currently a high number of locations awaiting thermal patching so there is no specific timescale at present."

I will continue to pursue this as thermal patching would significantly improve the state of the cul de sac.

Designed to Inspire - Comics Art Tour - today!

From the Curator of Museum Services at the University of Dundee :

Our current exhibition in the Lamb Gallery, Designed to Inspire, showcases some of the University’s amazing design collections and highlights some key areas of Dundee’s design talent. One of these areas is comics, and over the past ten years we have been building up a unique collection of original comics art to support the growing amount of teaching and research in this field.

Today - Friday 7th September at 11am - you are invited to join comics creator and PhD student Zu Dominiak for an informal guided tour of the selection of comics art included in the Designed to Inspire exhibition as well as the new permanent display of comics art which she has curated next door in the Baxter Suite.

Admission is free and there is no need to book – we hope you will be able to join us. Please meet in the Lamb Gallery.

September at the Wighton

From Sheena Wellington :

One of the Friends of Wighton’s most important relationships is with Live Music Now and we are delighted to be welcoming two of their fine young musicians for the Lunchtime Recital on Wednesday 5th September.

Graham Rorie, fiddle & mandolin, and Aidan Moodie, vocal and guitar, are two of the most promising young musicians to recently emerge from Orkney's rich heritage of traditional music.

With a presence that's both familiar and forward-thinking, Graham and Aidan's playful arrangements are brought to life by a musical relationship almost a decade in the making.    The pair perform traditional tunes (both from "up home" in Orkney and further afield), self-penned numbers, and contemporary folk songs through an intimate combination of fiddle, guitar, mandolin, and voice.

In 2015, the boys won a coveted Danny Kyle Award at Celtic Connections, also reaching the semi-finals of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award the following year. Following this, they went on to form the four-piece folk band Gnoss - recently nominated for an MG Alba "Up And Coming" award at the 2017 Trad Awards.

"Aidan and Graham are superb musicians, not only that, they combine as a superb duo." Folk Radio UK

The recital starts at 1.15pm - admission is free.   Donations for the excellent work of Live Music Now welcome.

Replacement steps at Pentland #dundeewestend

I recently sought an update on behalf of Pentland residents about when the second set of new steps would be completed as was advised last week as follows :

"Our contractor on this project, Tayside Contracts, are advising that are awaiting on delivery of the anti slip material they need to finish off the steps. Without this, the steps could cause a slip hazard to members of the public. We would also not be prepared to open the steps for use until they are fully completed according to the design specification.

The material should be delivered next week and as soon as they receive it, they will assign a member of staff to finish the job. Once completed, an inspection will be carried out and assuming everything is satisfactory, the fencing will be removed.

You may be interested to know that we are currently working on trying to start the next phase of the steps this financial year. This phase will concentrate on replacing the steps between Pentland Avenue and Pentland Crescent. The same standard of specification will be applied to this phase as was used on the steps between Pentland Crescent and Colinton Place."

I am pleased to say the steps were completed and opened last Friday.
