West End Christmas Fortnight 2024!

The West End Christmas Fortnight starts next Thursday – 28th November - and has lots of great Christmas activities for all the family.

Thursday 28th November

12 noon to 2pm - West End Blethers from Dundee Pensioners’ Forum - at The Friary in Tullideph Road.  Aimed at older people in the West End.  Enjoy a cup of tea/coffee, cake, scones, and a bowl of soup.    No booking required.  

1pm to 2.15pm - Sinderins Community Hub – a cuppa and warm welcome for all in the community.  Meets Logie Sheltered Lounge in Lime Street.   No booking required.  

4pm to 8pm - CHRISTMAS FORTNIGHT HIGHLIGHT!     Winter WestFest!     With thanks to our friends at WestFest, the Perth Road is to be transformed into a winter wonderland, with buildings and shops illuminated and festive images projected onto prominent sites between Miller's Wynd and Sinderins.

For one night only, the Dundee WestFest team will provide an enchanting start to the West End Christmas Fortnight, with its first-ever Winter WestFest event, featuring a festive light trail alongside the traditional Christmas market in Miller's Wynd car park.

Santa will also be appearing on his sleigh to give out goody bags to children attending the market and there will be a schools’ Christmas concert in Dundee West Church to coincide with the start of the Christmas Fortnight.  Many thanks to Scotmid for sponsoring the goody bags.   Any left over after this event will thereafter be available at the Community Fridge.

From 4pm on Thursday November 28th, the festive light trail will be book-ended by illuminations at Blackness Library in Sinderins and The Gate Church, while colourful floodlights and festive-themed images, including children's and art students' artworks alongside interactive computer games, will be projected onto buildings up both sides of the road.

Many of the Perth Road businesses will be opening late and joining in the fun with impressive window displays and colourful shop lights.

4pm to 8pm – Dundee Art Society special evening - At Roseangle Art Gallery to support Winter WestFest and the start of West End Christmas Fortnight.

6pm to 6.50pm - CHRISTMAS FORTNIGHT HIGHLIGHT!   The West End Christmas Concert at Dundee West Church.  

Featuring our two secondary schools at Harris Academy and St John’s RC High School and four of our local primary schools – Tayview PS, St Joseph’s RC PS, Blackness PS, and Victoria Park PS – along with Cherry Blossom Nursery School. 

Our friends from St Ninian’s RC PS are our guest performers this year and Mains of Fintry Pipe Band will lead everyone to Winter WestFest after the concert.     Many thanks also to Rev Dr Jim Connolly for hosting the concert.   All welcome – see you there!

Friday 29th November

2pm to 4pm - Make a Christmas Stocking – Transition Dundee at The Wardrobe.   If you need somewhere to stash all your treats from Santa, we’ll show you how to make a patchwork stocking from scrap fabrics, it’ll be one of a kind!    Booking essential at www.tiny.cc/Sewing24

7pm to 9pm – Dundee Art Society Exhibition Opening and Awards Night – Showcasing amazing drawings, paintings and pastel work by local artists.   All welcome - no need to book.   Light refreshments and nibbles.    The Winter Exhibition and winter art sale then opens on Saturday 30th November at 11am and runs through till Saturday 7th December at 4pm.  Opening times are from 11am to 4pm daily (and until 9pm on Tuesday 3rd December).

Saturday 30th November

9.30am and 10.30am - Children’s Craft events.   For young school age children, these 2 one hour free workshops are led by the wonderful Lisa Earl of ‘Create … Kids Create Crafts’.   Takes place at Blackness Library.   

The 9.30am and 10.30am one hour sessions are each restricted to 25 children who must be accompanied by a parent or carer who must stay with their child throughout the session.

10am to 12 noon - Blackness Primary School Christmas Fair – from Friends of Blackness.   Many stalls as always and fun for all the family.   All welcome.

Saturday 23rd November 11am Cappuccino Concert : Sandy Brechin, accordion, & Ewan Wilkinson, guitar

(admission £5 with tea/coffee available for donation)

Sandy and Ewan have been playing together for more than ten years. They regularly tour Scotland, England and Wales, appearing at folk clubs and several folk festivals throughout the year, as well as their annual spots at the Edinburgh International Festival Fringe. They have toured Australia three times, and also played in Bahrain and Sweden.

Ewan and Sandy play a mixture of Scottish, Irish and English traditional songs and tunes, together with contemporary folk songs and original compositions. Many of the contemporary folk songs are written by Ewan himself.

Many thanks to the residents who contacted us recently about a missing utility cover on the pavement of Blackness Road just west of the junction with Blackness Avenue

We asked the Roads Maintenance Partnership to contact the appropriate utility company to fit a new cover to remove the trip-hazard and are pleased to advise it was promptly resolved thereafter.

Getting things done - Access to Corso Street sheltered lounge #dundeewestend

We have received concerns that access to Corso Street sheltered lounge is proving difficult for the elderly tenants due to a mass of fallen slippy leaves - see photo :


Other sheltered lounge accesses - such as Tullideph - have been swept so we have asked the council's environment management to remove the leaves in the path to the Corso Street complex as soon as possible.

Many thanks to the residents who contacted us recently about the deteriorated state of some of the Eurobins and food bins on Perth Road - particularly just east of Ryehill Lane and in front of St Peter's Free Church.

We asked the waste services manager at the City Council if these could be replaced and received the following helpful response :

Temporary Traffic Orders - Marchfield Road, Marchfield Crescent and Hyndford Street


As we have raised concerns about the deteriorating road surfaces in Marchfield Road, Marchfield Crescent and Hyndford Street, we are pleased to see these two temporary traffic orders for repairs being issued :

THE ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 - SECTION 14(1)

FIRST :

THE DUNDEE CITY COUNCIL AS TRAFFIC AUTHORITY being satisfied that traffic on the road should be prohibited by reason of carriageway patching works being carried out HEREBY PROHIBIT the driving of any vehicle in Marchfield Road and Marchfield Crescent (between Blackness Road and Rockfield Street), Dundee.

This notice comes into effect on Monday 11th November 2024 for five working days.

Pedestrian thoroughfare will be maintained.

Vehicular access for residents will be maintained where possible.

A diversion is available via Blackness Road / West Park Road / Perth Road / Rockfield Street and in reverse.

SECOND :

Talk Money Week : 4th to 8th November 2024


Even with an increase in cost of living-related news, it can be hard to talk about money.

Talk Money Week 2024 is an annual campaign that encourages open conversations about personal finance, money management, and financial well-being.

This week-long initiative aims to break the taboo surrounding money-related discussions and empower individuals and families to make informed financial decisions.

Talk Money Week provides a platform for sharing knowledge, seeking advice, and improving financial literacy.

Community growing initiative - Tait's Lane to Peddie Street #dundeewestend


Last year, we mentioned the excellent community growing initiative residents have started in the path that runs from Tait's Lane to Peddie Street, which has allowed for community use of the planters for growing herbs, vegetables, fruits and flowers.
