Inappropriate bus use of Hyndford Street – a further update #dundeewestend

Residents will recall our most recent post about Stagecoach buses using Hyndford Street back on 4th May and the good news that the bus company had agreed to move buses away from this highly residential street where buses did not even stop.

We have now received a further update from the Commercial Director of Stagecoach East Scotland to confirm the date from which buses will stop using Hyndford Street and the new route, as follows :

"The paperwork for registration was submitted last Friday and this would be with a start date of 7th July to meet necessary timescales.

The route submitted comes out of Hyndford Street as discussed and instead turns via Bellfield Street.

We've also made a wider change to the route to return via Hawkhill rather than via Perth Road /Nethergate and we're using the additional time now available on this service to cover another request we've had in the city centre - a bus departing the bus station and dropping off at the rail station.

The new route and timings therefore retain the service as it was in the eastern section but with suitable timing adjustments to provide more onward connections, the maps may help to illustrate the route east to west."

Pension credit update

Over £3 million has been put into the pockets of Dundee pensioners, thanks to city-wide efforts encouraging people to apply for Pension Credit.

The council’s Council Advice Services Team has been running a campaign with Dundee Citizens Advice Bureau and Brooksbank to maximize the income of as many citizens of Dundee as possible over the state pension age.

Since the launch of this campaign, over £3,148,494 has been awarded to the citizens of Dundee through various benefits. With the average Pension Credit award being £68 per week, and an average backdated pension credit award of over £900.

The council continues to identify and contact households who might be entitled to Pension Credit and to reach as many people as possible.

Pension Credit is a payment for those whose income is less than the UK Government states someone over Pension age should receive.

Entitlement to Pension Credit depends on a person’s circumstances and looks at all the income in the household as well as savings over a certain amount. Whilst savings are considered, there is no upper threshold, so having savings does not necessarily mean there would be no entitlement.

Pension Credit also gives eligibility to free NHS dental treatment, NHS glasses, free TV Licence for over 75s, amongst other benefits.

Anyone looking to get a benefits check should contact the team on cas@dundeecity.gov.uk or the Older People’s Take-up Campaign line on 434474.

Milnbank Road mural #dundeewestend

With thanks to Open Close Dundee :

"Substations make some of the best canvases, and Lauren Morsley has completely transformed Milnbank Park with this piece!

Taking inspiration from workshops held earlier this year, this design represents local community, diversity, friendship and nature - all brought together with a warm, cheerful palette.

There are so many thoughtful details within this design that came from workshop suggestions, such as the sunflower to highlight those with hidden disabilities.

A special shout out to Dundee Changemakers and Uppertunity for their vision in commissioning this project, and all the community participants who made this happen."

Peter Flynn : Crossings

From the Curator of Museum Services at the University of Dundee :

"The latest exhibition in the Tower Foyer Gallery showcases the work of painter Peter Flynn and celebrates 50 years since he enrolled at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art.

Entitled Crossings, the exhibition features work representing ideas and thoughts influenced by the artist’s travels and environment. They explore what he has gathered both physically and emotionally as he travels around the world and in the world. It includes recent work as well as some of Peter’s student works from the DJCAD Collection.

Born in Paisley, Peter Flynn gained his Diploma in Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in 1979, completing a postgraduate year in 1980. He went on to train as a teacher and during this time was awarded the prestigious Elizabeth Greenshield Award, allowing him to travel and work in various countries.

On his return he was invited to take part in the pioneering Blackness Public Art Programme, creating the Lochee Fence and the Polepark Arch. Peter continued to exhibit his work while also enjoying a long career in teaching, ultimately becoming Principal Teacher of Art at St John’s RC High School. Since retiring he has been painting and exhibiting full time.

West End - early 1960s #dundeewestend

With thanks to SJ Bogue and Dundee Memories, a great early 1960s aerial shot of the West End from Perth Road at Seabraes looking west.

The photo was labelled "1950s" but we think it must have been taken from the Tower Building and this did not open until 1961.   We also note the Perth Road tramlines are gone so the photo was clearly taken after 1956 when the tram service ended.

The number of large factory chimneys in the photo show just how much the area has changed over the last 60+ years!

Getting things done - issues around the Seabraes site #dundeewestend

We have recently received concerns from residents regarding the Scottish Enterprise ground at Seabraes - specifically - the fenced off ground where decontamination works took place and Scottish Enterprise is now attempting to resolve groundwater issues has been left unsecured;  also the bins along the path from Roseangle to Greenmarket have not been being serviced efficiently.

We raised this with Scottish Enterprise to request that its agents Colliers dealt with these issues and received the following response :

"I can confirm that Colliers are now addressing the issues you have raised.

By way of an update on the drainage issue, we are working with Network Rail and Tesco to agree an entitlement which will allow SE to access a pipe which may solve the groundwater issues on the site. This, unfortunately is something that may take time, however we are working towards a resolution."
