Start of West End Christmas Fortnight today - and Winter WestFest! #dundeewestend

It is the start of West End Christmas Fortnight today - and Winter WestFest takes place tonight.

Here's a run through of the main highlights to look forward to today :

4pm to 8pm - Winter WestFest returns this year with another special Christmas Market to launch the West End Christmas Fortnight. Following on from last year's inaugural event, which included a festive lighting and projection trail up Perth Road between Miller's Wynd and Blackness Library, this year sees an exciting and major planned alteration to the format.

Winter WestFest organiser Alan Wilson explains: "While our first-ever winter event was a huge success, bringing hundreds of families out to enjoy the Christmas Market and the lights trail, we felt this year we should keep the focus more on the activities around Miller's Wynd, including some lovely Christmas carols from the Winter WestFest choir. As well as the traditional visit from Santa, there will also be children's fairground entertainments, a mix of craft stalls, a food stall and mulled wine available from Cairn O' Mohr to warm the parents up."

The Winter WestFest Christmas Market event begins at 4pm, Santa arrives around 6.30pm and the event concludes at 8pm.

4pm to 8pm – Blackness Library - open with night-time stories for children at 5pm, 6pm & 7pm.

5.30pm to 6.20pm - The West End Christmas Concert at Dundee Westgait Church Roseangle, 132 Perth Road. Note earlier starting time this year.

Featuring our local secondary schools and primary schools, along with Cherry Blossom Nursery School. Guest performers are The Notables and Mains of Fintry Pipe Band will lead everyone to see Santa and Winter WestFest after the concert. Many thanks also to Rev Grant Maclaughlan for hosting the concert.

Getting things done - City Road and Tullideph Road #dundeewestend

A resident recently wrote to us as follows :

"I would much appreciate it if you could contact the roads department, if appropriate, re the traffic lights at the junction of City Road and Tullideph Road. For some time I have been concerned about the short length of time that the green man stays on for.

It is impossible even for a fit healthy person to cross the road before the green man disappears and back to red.

As you will be aware, lots of elderly and disabled people and those with limited mobility live in this area. I have experienced problems myself, with my grandchildren trying to get across in time.

I believe that the crossing would be made much safer if the time allocated to the green man lengthened."

We raised this with the road safety team at the City Council and have no received the following helpful response :

"One of our Traffic Engineers in UTC has reviewed the pedestrian crossing timings at the junction.

Currently, the green man signal is active for 6 seconds—this serves as the invitation to begin crossing and does not exceed this duration. Following that, there is an intergreen period of 8 seconds, allowing pedestrians time to complete their crossing before vehicle signals turn green. This results in a total crossing time of 14 seconds.

To improve pedestrian safety concerns from your constituent, the intergreen time has now been increased to 15 seconds. This change provides a total crossing time of 26 seconds, giving pedestrians additional time to safely cross after the green man signal turns off.

This adjustment will be applied consistently across all four crossing points at the Tullideph/City Road junction.

Any further increases to the pedestrian crossing timing element are unfortunately not feasible without negatively impacting traffic flow and increasing congestion."

The pavement 20-40 Perth Road (south side) is in really poor condition and we received complaints from residents about this.

We therefore asked for it to be included in a future footpath capital improvements programme.

We had a helpful response from the Roads Maintenance Partnership as follows :

"This is with a colleague to see if it can be included in a future patching scheme."

Ian Hamilton Finlay exhibition special events #dundeewestend

Drawing on the University’s outstanding collection of nearly 300 works by the extraordinary artist, poet and gardener Ian Hamilton Finlay, the current exhibition in the Tower Foyer Gallery, Ian Hamilton Finlay: Works on Paper, draws you into an enticing but dangerous world of prints and poems, sails and sundials, gardens and guillotines.

• Riverside Avenue from its junction with Kingsway/Swallow Roundabout for a distance of 500 metres or thereby in a southerly direction to its junction with Apollo Way; and
• Dykes of Gray Road for a distance of 100 metres or thereby in a northerly direction from its junction with Kingsway/Swallow Roundabout.

A90 Kingsway (at Swallow roundabout) – overnight (7.30pm to 6.30am) northbound lane closure for one week for remedial works.

Bank of England Citizen’s Forum meeting in Dundee

The Bank of England is holding a Citizen’s Forum meeting here in Dundee on the 19th November and looking to add to its Citizen’s Panel.

The bank explains :

"We launched our Citizens' Forum in 2018 to improve engagement with members of the public.

Our forum consists of about 4,500 people from across the UK. Joining allows you to put your views directly to the Bank of England. It is also an opportunity for you to ask questions about our policies."

West End Local Community Planning Partnership Café Conversation #dundeewestend

The next West End LCPP meeting is on Thursday 20th November from 9.30am  until 11am at The Friary in Tullideph Road.

Working with What Matters to You this will be the first Café Conversation in the West End.

The LCCP Chair said :

"These sessions have been held in other parts of Dundee and offer a relaxed space for community members, practitioners, and strategic leaders to come together. The aim is to talk about what’s working well, what could be better, and how we can improve things together.

We’re encouraging people to share real experiences. We’ll spend time listening, identifying key issues, and exploring practical solutions.
